Butterfly ring with zirconia - Esquell.eu

Butterfly ring with zirconia

Butterfly ring made of silver clay with a blue heat resistant zirconia. For the butterfly is a silicone mold used. First you make a ring band, for this ring there is a texture in the ring with a piece of textured wallpaper. Do spray the wallpaper with Coolslip anti-stick formula, otherwise the clay will stick to it and you will lose of your precious clay.

Also spray the mold with a very small amount of Coolslilp. You can also apply the Coolslip with a small brush. This will prevent too much Coolslip from getting in. Too much means that your pattern will not print sharply because it will float and the clay will start to absorb Coolslip which is not good for the texture of the clay.

Once the mold is sprayed, press clay into the mold. Scrape off any excess with a clay knife. Since you have used anti-stick, you can now tip the silver butterfly out of your mold while it is still wet. Then press the zirconia into the wet clay where you want it. Be sure to press the zirconia deeper than the surface of the butterfly. The shrinkage of the clay will push the little stone upward when it is fired. If it is not deep enough, the little stone will end up above the surface or worse, it will become loose and fall out.

After baking let cool on the air. Do not put it in cold water. The stone will crack or change color.
